The Schönberg residence second story addition bears the mark of all things classically Dialect – a sophisticated use of color that effortlessly runs from the coolly subdued to the richly dramatic; an expert and unconventional approach to materials and construction; and an eye for detail so subtle the soul of the design is upon you before you know it.

Upon entering the library, “finesse” and “order” make a great first impression. The “boxes within boxes” construction of recessed shelves reveals shadow lines that seemingly float the shelves inside the library walls. This center houses five organizations, each wanted to retain something of their individuality. The building brings the uniqueness of the five organizations expressed: Four individually identifiable pavilions, each in their own color and material, are held together by a large binding roof, that sometimes canopy, sometimes porch, sometimes lean, sometimes just pergola is. The four pavilions focus all their own outdoor and sunny side: The kindergartens, mostly in the morning open, lying on the east side. The nursery, which is present all day, located on the south side to an intimate playground and outside school hours that pass in the afternoon, we in the west, aimed at the sun. This 2,500 sq ft retreat located just south of Carmel in a canyon off route 1 required many consultants to get planning approval.  The land had no services so a well, septic system and electricity had to be provided to the site.  The client requested that the structure be exposed and expressed in the architecture. We created an open plan with glass walls dividing the spaces on the upper floor.  This allows the roof to be seen continuously from both the interior and the exterior.  The floor plan was created with a double height central living space  flanked by a bedroom on either side and a utility bar containing the kitchen , two bathrooms and storage.   The roof of the utility bar is a deck that faces into 200 redwoods, also known as "the cathedral".  The open living space has a large glass box that opens to a deck, the canyon creek., and a warm fire nook.  The solid volume of the stair is the interior wall to the living space and the wall to the  exterior deck.  this emphasizes the indoor outdoor connection.   Upstairs is another bedroom and a bridge that connects to a library with the bookcases acting as the guardrails.  The exterior

materials need no maintenance.   The copper standing seem siding, glass, steel and plaster are non flammable materials.  The 15' high fence at the front of the house acts as a facade skin, guard rail, and screen to the master bedroom suite outdoor space.  The simple plan and use of materials create spaces that come alive and transform in response to the changing exterior light.

PASSIVE HOUSES AS TYPE HOUSES
Kjellgren Kaminsky has produced Swedens first series of passive houses sold as type houses in collaboration with Emrahus, our goal is to make this environmentally friendly building technique available for all. Villa Nyberg is the first one to get built. The villa has been customized for the Nyberg family and is situated in Borlänge, central Sweden.

THE PASSIVE HOUSE CONCEPT
Passive houses are extremely well-insulated buildings that are largely heated by the energy already present in the building - people and our household equipment generate a lot of energy. Our energy simulations show that this villa will have an energy consumption for heating of only 25 kWh/m²year.

SWEDISH RECORD IN AIRTIGHTNESS
To reduce heatloss airtightness is n important feature of a passivehouse. When we tested the airtightness of Villa Nyberg in a blowdoortest we got apleasent suprise, a new Swedish record! The result was 0,038 l/sm² at 50 Pa. The Swedish passive house standard is 0,3 and the previous record was 0,07.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES
The villa is situated by a lake in a fur forest in central Sweden. The living room and kitchen open up towards the views of the lake, the more private areas such as the bedrooms and bathrooms are situated on the other side of the house with smaller windows overlooking the forest. The round shape of the villa eliminates coldbridges and reduces the enclosing wallarea of the house. It also effects the way you live in the house, during the day one will move from room to room around the building experiencing different views and daylight conditions.

LIVING IN VILLA NYBERG
The autumn is closing in, but its still warm in the sun. Its Sunday morning and I’m reading the newspaper in the kitchen. From here I can see almost the whole house. The kitchen and the living room form one big open room. From there two corridors running along the atrium connects it with the bedrooms. If I look into the atrium I can see the doors to the bedrooms on the other side, there our kids are still fast asleep, they stayed up a bit too long yesterday watching movies.

Kensington Light House by Tandem Studio Design

The Kensington Lighthouse is situated on a 160m2 strip of land between a former factory and its kitchen in a densely urbanised, mixed-use inner city context. On the north, the neighbouring house presents a 4m high wall overshadowing the site. North facing sunshells were created to capture and reflect sunlight; articulated by exposed timber portal frames lined with veneered plywood clad in lightweight metal skin of dark grey and deep blue corrugated metal.
The sunshells form the roof and south façade. On the north, west and east – patterns of double glazing and translucent polycarbonate were used to frame views and admit light while preserving privacy - the translucent skin capturing shadows of neighbouring trees, passing clouds and filtering light to the interior.

The house is made from two sunshells, connected around a courtyard by a rectangular timber lined volume running the length of the north boundary. The west sunshell contains entry, lounge, kitchen, double height dining space on the lower level; and study, guest bed and bathroom on the mezzanine. The east sunshell -at the rear of the site, across the courtyard and on a mid-level - houses the master bedroom and ensuite - below is a double carport accessed from the rear laneway. Designed to comply with a 5 star energy rating, the Light House also incorporates a range of green measures to reduce the environmental impact of the building:
- rainwater tank beneath the courtyard
- heat pump on the hot water service
- grey water diverter
- solar array on the link roof
- double glazing throughout
- triple cell polycarbonate skin
- rainwater harvesting system

Located in the penthouse of a concrete high-rise on Aquatic Park. The original 4-bedroom/4-bath penthouse was a rabbit's warren of confusing rooms. In our re-design, rooms were combined and uses were re-assigned to allow the occupants to take advantage of the views looking north and south and the movement of the sun through out the day.

Materials used are clear and etched 1/2" glass, slabs of Black walnut, hand made mosaic tile walls, and gun blued steel.

The unique Auto Residence was built on the border of a nature preserve in Gnigl near Salzburg, Austria. The owners originally purchased a corner lot with a typical 70’s style suburban home on it, and wanted to renovate and update the house and structure. This presented many opportunities, as well as challenges, including:

Transforming a 70’s style house structure and design into that of a car.
Creating two separate dwelling areas for parents and children by closing off former openings and thereby allowing future generations to live under one roof.
Instituting a “3 liter” energy efficient heating and insulation technique that optimizes all current building technologies, drastically reducing energy consumption.
Adherence to all the strict, legal building and design codes which regulate the compliance for projects in this prime location in historic Salzburg, Austria.

Task: Planning of a bi-familiar house on high architectonic level for the cohabitation of 3 generations with common spaces.

Idea: To create a monolithic house with common spaces, under whose roof two independent habitation units are unified.

Orientation: Considering the orientation of the views. The east-wing is looking towards Valle d’adige and the west-wing Val Venosta.

Design: The form answers to the characteristics of local mountains and its three-dimensional facade to the path oft he sun. The windows and the shadings are positioned such way, that the energy balance is optimized and the panorama is introduced in picture frames.

Appearance: A modern house with a traditional dressing : The larch-wood shingle façade is representing the traditional craft of the Alps-region Upper Adige.

Interior: The chosen materials are typical for the place: marble of Lasa, porphyr, granite, wood of the larch and the oak.

Swiss architecture firm Nimmrichter CDA Architects are the creators of this atypical Switzerland timber home design on the outskirts of Zurich, Switzerland. And while this wood house may use traditional materials, its architecture is contemporary cool. A strong horizontal presence is anchored by the roofline and the pattern of the timber panels finishing the facade. This beautiful home was designed by architect, Sarah Susanka, for herself. She built it originally to illustrate the ideas she was writing about in her first book in the Not So Big® series--The Not So Big House: A Blueprint for the Way We Really Live. It is designed to promote a floor plan that is far more appropriate for present day lifestyles, and it is filled with special details that make the house a delight to live in, while living up to it Not So Big® name. Instead of building formal spaces that rarely if ever get used, this house is designed so that every space will be put to good use everyday. Primitive House design in Saijo Hiroshima designed by Suppose Design Office, Japan

35 year old talented architect Makoto Tanijiri, chief architect of Suppose Design Office. In the nine year existence of Suppose Design Office they have built more than 50 works of architecture, almost all single-family homes, among other projects. The impressive number of works completed topped up in 2007 with the modern pit dwelling in Saijo, Hiroshima. In Saijo, a town known for it sake, a jet black pyramid unexpectedly stands out; when first seen it seems as if it’s a house from the future. On the contrast, it’s actually inspired by the earliest house in Japanese architecture; the pit dwelling or the “tateana jukyo”. Constructed during the Yayoi era (200 B.C. – 250 A.D.), pit dwellings were built by digging a circular pit (or rectangular one with rounded edges) fifty or sixty centimeters deep and five to seven meters in diameter, then covering it with a steep thatched roof. Not very different from talented young architects Makoto Tanijiri’s modern day pit dwelling.

The sunken level of the house is communal; the perimeter is constructed by exposed glossy concrete. The sunken level is open plan and consists of the living, kitchen and dining areas. Although it is a meter below ground level it has a lot of natural light as Tanjiri placed ribbon windows running on all four sides. Four inclined black steel V plates were placed at each corner of the ground floor, to support the construction and the other two levels of the pit dwelling. A timber staircase without handrails leads to the first floor where the master bedroom and bath is found; however, it also neatly conceals a washroom located on the ground floor. The master bedroom enjoys a terrace, which is cut into the surface of the pyramid-like construction thus allowing natural light into the master bedroom. A transitional sentiment of calmness and anticipation reveals the perplexed entry into the cone shaped construction through the connection of a minimal steel staircase, artistic and creative, as is usually the case in Japanese houses, where the disorientation in design that the handrail creates is omitted.

House at Punta Chilen designed by Nicolás del Río, Max Núñez Architects

Located on the tip of a peninsula on the island of Chiloe, the site offers an open view of the horizon 360º around it and distant views over the Andes mountains where at least 8 volcanos can be seen (some of them still active). A rhythmic repetition of columns on the first floor carry the structure to the perimeter and generates changing shadows on the interiors. The oblique shape of the corten steel roof on the second floor defines an irregular perimeter opposed to the flat line of the horizon, creating a contained living space to inhabit during the rainy days of Chiloe.

The irony of not having direct view of the ocean on a seaside house appears as a possibility for orienting this beach house towards a more unexpected landscape. The open horizon of the Pacific has been replaced by the view the near hillsides to the west, and to the protected space defined by a group of preexisting trees. This independent backyard, isolated from the intense summer life of the beach town of Cachagua, offers a calmed retreat to take distance from the city. Here, the close relation to topography stimulates spontaneous exterior circulations between rooms, giving the same relevance to the interior life of the house as to the exterior events, trying to enhance the informal condition of the beach house and the possibility of a life “outdoors”.

Spanish architects A-cero sent us some photos of an amazing and unusual prefab home that we just had to share. This black glass house design not only looks cool, but it is also the beginnings of a modular industrialized architectural construction process. Benefiting from the same modularity, technology, quality control and timeframe as modern industrial manufacture (architect are director of the project Joaquin Torres likens the process to Ford’s production lines) this new method of designing and building houses will benefit from factory production and on-site assembly, resulting in shorter construction times, more specialized labour, higher overall quality and lower price. This prefab home, one of two pilot projects, even comes with the option of being fully decorated and equipped, ready for occupancy – could you imagine yourself living here? We could! Inside, the main hallway can be compared to a tree trunk, lined with a rich wood floor and ceiling, and the home’s various rooms branching off it in succession. Modern Open Plan Glass House Design in Johannesburg, South Africa

This modern, glamorous, open plan, light-filled glass house is designed by Nico Van Der Meulen Architects. The house is situated on a 4000 sq.m site, with a total floor area of 2500sq.m, with views from all rooms into the garden in Johannesburg, South Africa. The shape on the south side is a half circle, forming a horseshoe on the north side. Approaching the house form the gate the driveway is elevated to allow glimpses thru’ the house to the garden and raised water feature on the other side of the house.

The porte cochere is a suspended glass and stainless steel structure, with view into the house and a stainless steel and glass staircase, suspended over a heated pond, (which in summer acts as a temperature stabilizer, and in winter as a giant heater) with a circular, raised glass water feature in the background, framed by a beam two storeys high.

To the right is a small sunken formal lounge, and to the left a timber-clad lift tower. The dining room is raised a couple of steps above the family room. The window to the dining room is a 6m high curved glass enclosure, where each sheet of glass leans over further than the previous sheet, with glass fins holding it in position.

The frameless glass folding doors starts at the dining room, and stretches for nearly 70m around the dining room, family room, lanai, indoor pool and gym. The family room is partially double volume, flowing seamlessly into the lanai and heated indoor pool, with a bar, pizza oven, gas and wood braai.

The kitchen leads off the family room and dining room, with a pair of automatic, frameless sandblasted doors leading from the dining room to the kitchen. A breakfast area and playroom are adjacent to the kitchen, allowing the younger kids to be supervised from the kitchen and family room, and allowing direct access to the bar and barbeque area from the kitchen.

An atrium between the family room and the kitchen allows the family to ventilate and cool the house naturally, without compromising their security, while a roller shutter door drops down automatically when the alarm is activated, cutting the top floor off from the ground floor.

The walls to the family room and bar is clad with marble strips, with glass inlays and LED strip lights. You can jump from the main bedroom into the pool, swim to the gym, swim back and use the steel spiral staircase to go back to the main bedroom , or tip a tipsy friend into the pool from his barstool!

The lanai opens up totally to the outdoor pool with a deck, spilling into a kid’s splash pool at the bottom.
A basement under the house have parking for about 12 cars, with a view into the pool, and a top-lit art gallery which forms the passage between the garages and the lift.

A feature wall opposite the living areas is clad in stone from Jerusalem, with a tree aloe growing in front of it. The stone comes from buildings hundreds of years old, being demolished in Israel to make space for development. The same stone is used in the dining room, flowing thru’ the glass wall to the outside.

The study is a glass box at the top of the staircase, with a view over the pools at the bottom. A large playroom is situated next to it, with an intimate home theater and kitchenette, leading to a large balcony with a shaded porch. The main bedroom on the other side of the hall is reached via a gallery looking down into the dining room and out to the garden.

The main suite has a small lounge and built-in kitchenette, with a drop-down screen and projector built into the bulkhead. The main bathroom is a study in glass and transparency: The North and east walls are glass and slides open, even if privacy is required, the doors can be left open and the automatic blinds can be lowered, still allowing views and ventilation, but looking translucent from outside.

A large balcony off the main bedroom is partially covered, granting respite from the summer sun, or allowing all fresco early morning coffee or late afternoon drinks, while a staircase to the roof allows views over the surrounding suburb and towards Midrand.

The double volume glass enclosure over the pool can be opened from the balcony outside the children’s bedrooms, allowing a cooling updraft over the pool.From another balcony the door overlooking the double volume in the family room can be opened, again resulting in a cooling chimney effect to the living areas.

Modern House Design in La Zagaleta by Peter Thomas de Cruz

Peter Thomas de Cruz is a British based architect who has designed this beautiful modern contemporary house design located in La Zagaleta, Spain. This contemporary house occupies a hillside site inland from the coast of southern Spain. The brainchild of the developers, the house challenges the orthodoxy of much of the recent pseudo-vernacular development in the area with calm, flowing spaces, a considered response to topography and climate and simplicity in detail.

With stunning views across a valley towards distant mountains in the west, this largely single aspect house uses the slope of the site to maximum advantage. The core of the house is a top lit double height gallery flooded with natural light that runs across the slope of the site. The prime living spaces are on the west side of the gallery whilst to the east ancillary accommodation and cooling courtyards are set into the hillside. All of the full height glazed facades parallel with the slope open fully to allow air to pass through the building, making the most of anabatic and katabatic winds. The cross ventilation, combined with large cantilevered roof overhangs and balconies which provide solar shading, reduces the reliance on air conditioning and extends the opportunity for comfortable open air living.

From the entrance of the house an elliptical curved wall on the westerly side peels away from the main axis, widening the gallery and pulling you towards a double height window at the end, progressively revealing a single mountain peak in the distance. Punched holes in the gallery wall give glimpses of mountain views to the west across the series of interconnected open plan living spaces. The end of the gallery culminates in a large double height living space that leads towards a disappearing edge swimming pool which projects out into space. At first floor level, a bridge open on both sides overlooking the main living space leads to the master bedroom suite, which is connected to a private study below by a spiral staircase wrapped within the ‘tail’ of the curved wall.

Adding to the sense of spectacle the house is dramatically cut in two perpendicular to the gallery with a glass-floored dining space bridging the gap between the two halves and linking the cooking space to the living space. The parallel gallery sits astride an internal pool and, when all the glazing is fully retracted, both the gallery and the dining space become bridges fully open to the air. The calmness of the house is accentuated by water flowing from the gallery courtyard pool down over a slate-finished waterfall beneath the dining room to meet the lowest of the two connected swimming pools.

Bio Beam Bridge Home: 50-Foot Cantilever Green Roof Deck

A regular rooftop deck structure has a lot of load in the best of circumstances – but deflection becomes a much bigger problem when you not only want to make it green, but also want to have it span for dozens of feet with no visible means of support. For a fairly simple and modern-looking home there is some extreme green engineering going on within the so-called Villa Bio.

The design concept envisioned by the architects of Cloud9 involves folding solids and slices that reveal voids in between to let in light and allow for views out via the opened-up spaces. From interior concrete stairs and slopes to the underground parking ramp, each piece feels like it was cut from a single folding ribbon – a building unwrapping itself before your eyes.

In turn, like an angled bridge into the sky, the roof seems almost to be ‘pealed’ upward by some unseen force – and the main solid structural wall on either side of the long and narrow house rise up with it to reveal sections of clean and clear glass on the outside and view-through layers on the interior.

Acting like a single solid-poured support beam, the cast-in-place concrete roof stays put without any interior columns or apparent smaller beams to support it. It spans from one side of the home to the other with nothing in between and glass at either end to show off the span. The sustainable hydroponic rooftop garden is not just for show – an extensive eco-friendly landscape you can walk right up on to water.

The task was to create reasonably-priced residential space with high standards of living comfort for four differently sized parties. In the processs, each party was to profit as much as possible on the one hand from the 3,000 m2 south-facing environs, and on the other from the north-facing view of the city. This determined an unconventional and complex internal organisation of the building. All four apartments are accessible via a two-storey entrance hall, each of them having their own internal staircase of one or two floors. In principle the double-storey apartments and the two roof apartments are encapsulated in each other so that the quality of the four-sided building is fully exploited. Common place and unrefined materials such as concrete, timber, wood and glvanised steel were chosen, which animated each other when combined. The precise insertion of coloured kitchens with reflective glass surfacing and the extensive coloured glass panelling of the bathroom walls contrast with the the coarse concrete and the organic patterns of the wood. The basement, the vertical stairwells and the partitioning walls between the apartment units are made of concrete cast in situ (basic shuttering). This guarentees that the fire proofing and acoustic demands set by the timber elements, which constitute most of the rest of the spatial structure, are met. The concrete core constitutes the "skeleton" of the actual wooden structure, the organic softness of which heightens the rawness of the concrete. The ceilings and the walls are made of prefabricated, isolated wooden elements of spruce. The interior surfaces consist of boxing plywood on the walls and bonded boarding on the ceilings. The construction and the dileneation of the rooms are congruous. The individual building elements and the building processes are legible. Due to their slightly polygonal geometry, the wooden elements have the characteristics of a piece of carpenter's furniture. The most striking characteristic of the galvanised sheet-metal façade is the differentiation of the form of the window openings on the north and south sides.

The new kiosk is conceived as a pavilion amongst the trees in the listed park by the lake, as an object that is a further link in the chain of leisure amenities stretching along the lakeside landscape. In principle the aim was an integrated treatment of the façades and to largely dispense with the usual differentiation of the front and the back in order to obtain an object-like and sculptural appearance.
The new building is principally fabricated as a steel construction so as to generate lightness and transparency. To counter vandalism and dirt, insulation glass was used as a façade material because it is simple to clean and graffiti can be easily removed from it. The individual panes are coloured and more or less transparent, making the kiosk an illuminated object at night and an attraction for evening strollers. The colouring gives the pavilion a Mediterranean flair and lends it a specific identity.
Due to the polygonal form of its plan, the volume of the new building articulates external connections using simple means. The main entrance of the kiosk and the exterior forecourt for summer restaurant use are emphasised by the concave course of the façade and the orientation towards the lake. The kiosk consists of a transversable sales area that can be spaciously opened up in summer. The entrances to the public toilets are seperated from the workings of the restaurant by the specific geometry of the building and allow a good measure of social control. The polygonal building volume is not intended to be understood as a piece of formal vocabulary but as a working material that allows a soft and situative handling of space, programme and context.

As part of a total resort reconstruction, which invited some of Russia’s top architects to flex their muscles, so to speak, most of the buildings here are designed by architect Totan Kuzembaev – including Red Guest Houses. Located in Moskovskaya Oblast, Russia, this unusual raised home design took center stage and even picked up a number of awards along the way. Distinctive for their vibrant red color and beach home exteriors, these guest houses are compact, lightweight homes of wood, raised to adapt to the hillside. The house is hided behind a harmonious sculptural set of curved walls made of stone dark granite and marble travertino that seem to emerge from a big water plate arranged in the house entry.

In addition to the beauty of this structure, it offers a high grade of privacy and tact between the exterior (street) and the house. Other more, this structure goes to the back part, as a front, where is a natural, clear and kind scenery.

This block disposition and the house plot (a descending slope towards a lake) are used to distribute the house in two plants: a high floor, with exterior access, and a low floor. Both of them are looking to a wide terrace with a pergola and to the garden house.

In the high plant, we find a very wide and luminous hall provided with natural light for top skylights, and with two plates of waters dominated by two bronze lions. In addition it is used to lead to the kitchen, wine vault, dining room, lounge, office – library, and to the most private area: the principal bedroom, dressing-room, bath, interior swimming pool and small gymnasium. Also we find the stairs that descend to the low floor where there are a games lounge and a movies room, kids and guests bedrooms and the service area with two bedrooms in suite and with a wide area for the housework. All the house rooms are provided with wide large windows in a dark safety glass. These windows (that also works as doors) and a lot of house elements are completely computerized and motorized: lighting, safety, blinds, air conditioning … everything is centralized.

The high floor communicates with a terrace. In the lounge the access to outside is made by a long large window that provides a continuity sensation from the interior space to outside.

This terrace is covered by a pergola made of an aluminium structure that supports the sculptural premeditation of the building. In one of the side parts of the garden, there is a relaxation area with a pond of Buddhist inspiration.

The Bluff House by Bruns Architecture

Bluff House sits along the crown of a 30-mile long oval bluff range, its intersecting volumes growing out of the site’s gently sloping terrain. Approaching the house from the former logging road carving through the site’s rhythmic woodland, the building’s silhouette slowly emerges from the dense vegetation. With its simple, diagrammatic geometry and layered use of materials, the house achieves a legible clarity and rustic warmth that welcomes visitors.

CONTEXT:
Informed by early studies of the geology of the region, the house’s two concrete organizing walls prove as strong and distinct as the metamorphic quartzite composition of the bluffs that have resisted erosion from weathering, rivers and glaciers over the past 350 million years. Growing out of the staggered solid walls are lighter assemblies of solid cedar sided panels and glazing. The fenestration patterns offer a variety of vistas from, and often through, the house echoing the varied site lines one experiences when walking through the forested bluff. The windows alternate between full height vertical apertures and horizontal clerestories, but always follow the strict 59” structural grid of the building’s exposed structure.

ORGANIZATION:
The first concrete wall separates residents entering through the garage and guests entering through the solid wood entry door. The separate entry sequences are rejoined at the entry foyer where the concrete mass extends into the interior space. Once inside, a circulation gallery invites you into the main living hall, or alternately down to the mechanical and storage walk-out level. The open plan of the public volume includes kitchen, dining and living space and opens up to extended views of the forested bluff the house literally and figuratively grows out of.

TECHNICAL:
The building’s envelope is composed of super insulated polyurethane SIP wall and roof panels and high performing low-e coated argon filled glazing. The 1,490 sf of finished main level is heated with a hydronic radiant heat system that uses the mass of the lower level slab to maintain a comfortable environment. The heat stored in the slab naturally radiates up through slots, directing warm air past the main level glazing and is returned through the open stair, completing the convection cycle. Outside air is filtered through a heat recovery ventilator, bringing fresh air into the home without sacrificing thermal performance.

Set high in the Sierra Madre mountain range, the Torres House seeks to establish an intimate contact with the natural environment in which it is located. Discreetly open towards the street, the house is accessed by crossing over a fountain from which a huge oak free emerges, impressive both for its size and its beauty.
Once on the porch, a grand mural like door constructed of marble, wood and steel welcomes the visitor.
Inside, the entry hall merges into an area of contrasting materials consisting of Santo Tomas marble and volcanic stone walls. From this area there is a visual continuity with the rest of the house and with the garden that was left in its natural state as a small oak forest.
In the living room, conceived almost as a glass box, one can experience the view to the Sierra Madre peaks in the distance and the garden near by. Owing to its location within the mountain, where winters can get really cold, there is a fireplace for the family to gather around in the evenings.
From the dining room and the media room, one can access the roof terrace and enjoy the splendid views of the Sierra Madre as well as of the city of Monterrey. Here is the musical background of the sounds of nature is in sharp contrast to the roar of the city below.

The projects starts from a series of physical conditions that make of the site a place of great aesthetic potential due to the huge trees and the little creek that can be found in the back of it.
On the other hand, the future expansion of the street which it is located demanded a considerable setback, which forced the scheme to be a compact one, so that we could keep some useful area for a garden near the living room.
Looking for some design principle that could be carried out troughout the project, we decided to emulate the basic geometry of the site, which suggested us to propose three walls of large dimensions. Through the subtle rotation of one such walls, we found the opportunity to create an irregular, double height space, which begins as a porch on it’s widest end, to then become a hall and gradually narrow until becoming a simple circulation zone.
The different finishes given to the surfaces, searches for a subtle contrast between the plain white stucco of the volumes and prefabricated panels made of travertine marble covering the large walls that articulate the whole project. This was done with the purpose of reinforcing the architectural expression of such walls, with a touch of color from natural materials that will not put the performance of the project at risk for the years to come.

Stretching East to West across the site, the dynamic double skillion roofs provide ample northern light into every room in the house. A central spine between the two roofs splits the house into public and private functions and visually connects the entrance of the home to the sculptural forms of the rear garden. The home thermally performs exceptionally due to ample thermal mass to the south, double glazed windows to the north, long eaves, and a subfloor airspace to stabilize the diurnal range. Beautifully put together by the owner David Emery, who brought his cabinet making sensibility to the intricately crafted detailing.

This striking three-bedroom house forms part of one the most remarkable housing developments built in the UK during the 1960s. Designed by Laurie Abbott in 1966, this small-scale development is an example of post-war architecture at its most exciting. Abbott, who until his recent retirement was a senior director at the Richard Rogers Partnership, has been an instrumental figure on some of the most significant architectural achievements of the 20th century, including the Pompidou Centre and Lloyd's of London.

The house is one of 32, built in blocks of four among landscaped surroundings in the small, well-connected Surrey town of Frimley. The current owners have sympathetically maintained and updated the house to a high standard, including the fitting of double-glazed windows throughout. The property comes with a garage, a small courtyard garden and access to the more extensive communal gardens.

Frimley is easily accessed by road via the nearby M3, which leads directly into London and to the M25. It has a small train station which connects to London trains, however most Frimley residents who travel regularly to London prefer to drive or take the bus to nearby Farnborough station (approximately 5 minutes) to take the regular fast trains to Waterloo (journey time approximately 35 minutes). Frimley is well served by supermarkets, high-street shops and restaurants. It is also very close to the open Surrey and Hampshire countryside and green spaces such as Frimley Lodge Park.

The concrete and terrazzo exterior has been used to provide the house with mass and a sense of solidity. The aluminium cladding to the first floor provides a horizontal element which floats above the ground floor living spaces.

The entry and gallery are defined by timber paneled walls which clearly identify the circulation space and create a sense of warmth. Windows have been strategically placed to provide a series of garden views.

Built on an established site this house was designed to provide the clients with a strong connection to their garden. The house is constructed of concrete and is clad in a combination of stone and aluminium. Extensive use of glass ensures the exterior of the house will require little maintenance in the years to come.

The entry to the house provides a visual connection to the gallery space allowing the display of art and furniture while allowing views to the garden beyond. A see through stair provides a visual connection with the first floor.

The living area of the house looks out onto a swimming pool and a garden water feature beyond, this layered arrangement gives the site a feeling of luxury and space.

In 2005 Wilson and Hill Architects were commissioned to undertake this house on a large sloping northwest facing site on Scarborough Hill.

The house has been designed to be part of the hillside landscape over a series of levels.

At street level is a large triple garage, on the roof of the garage is an outdoor entertaining area with adjacent pool. An exposed concrete soffit has been used to create a protected space under the rooms above.

The middle level of the house contains guest bedrooms and a living area opening to the terrace.

The top level of the house is where the occupants spend most of their time, this level contains kitchen, dining, living , lounge and master bedroom.

The house has been planed using a series of radiating angles so each room has a subtly different view, framing each part of the panoramic view.

All three internal levels are connected with a lift.

Shouldn’t it be possible to conceal a house in an Alpine slope while still exploiting the wonderful views and allowing light to enter the building?

Surprised that it was permissible to construct a pair of dwellings so close to the world famous thermal baths of Vals, the client seized the opportunity to develop the site, without disturbing the bath’s expansive views. The introduction of a central patio into the steep incline creates a large façade with considerable potential for window openings. The viewing angle from the building is slightly inclined, giving an even more dramatic view of the strikingly beautiful mountains on the opposite side of the narrow valley.

The Local Authority’s well intentioned caution, that unusual modern proposals were generally not favoured, proved unfounded. The planners were pleased that the proposal did not appear ‘residential’ or impose on the adjacent baths building. The scheme was not perceived as a typical structure but rather an example of pragmatic unobtrusive development in a sensitive location. The placing of the entrance via an old Graubünder barn and an underground tunnel further convinced them that the concept, while slightly absurd, could still be permitted.

Switzerland’s planning laws dictate that it is only possible to grant a definitive planning permission after a timber  model of the building’s volume has first been constructed on site. This can then be accurately appraised by the local community and objected to if considered unsuitable. For this proposal, logic prevailed and this part of the process was deemed to be unnecessary.

What a bachelor pad! This awesome 1,800-sq.-ft. Monte-Silo House was designed by Gigaplex Architects for a single man and his weekend visitors to Woodland, Utah. Nestled comfortably among nature and on the Provo River, this modern silo house was constructed of two linked corrugated-metal grain silos, giving the home its unique look and wonderful circular rooms inside. But apart from aesthetics, this house boasts some other cool features – namely, its eco-friendly features. The home’s southern exposure maximizes natural daylight and solar heat gain during the cold winter months. Adding to the cozy warmth, an electric mesh is installed into the lower floor to heat the house, along with a propane-burning stove for backup. Warm in winter and cool in summer, the metal grating and the second-storey deck provide shade, and sweet relief from the hot summer sun. Last but not least, the bedrooms – made especially for the homeowner’s two grandchildren – are a “bed in a box” concept, each equipped with stereo sound and a flat-screen television.
